The format of this exam is as follows:

The GCSE languages speaking exam is a 7-9 minute (Foundation) or 10-12 minute (Higher) assessment consisting of three parts: a role-play, a photo card discussion, and a general conversation on two themes.

Students have 12 minutes of preparation time before the exam to review the role-play and photo card materials but cannot use dictionaries or have target language on the walls. The test is conducted by the student's teacher and recorded, with the marking handled by the awarding body.

There are strict deadlines for submitting GCSE non-examined assessment (NEA) marks, with the key submission window falling in the spring. For the main June 2026 exam series, centres are typically required to submit their marks by early to mid-May. For example, AQA's provisional deadline for most GCSE subjects is 7 May 2026.

The process involves teachers marking the work, the centre conducting internal moderation to ensure consistency, and then submitting the marks online to the exam board. Following this, the board will request a sample of student work for external moderation to verify that the centre's marking aligns with national standards.

The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has designated Wednesday 24 June 2026, as the contingency day for external written examinations in the UK summer series. This day will be used in the event of significant national or local disruption that prevents scheduled exams from taking place. Students must remain available for examinations until 24 June 2026, regardless of their individual timetable dates.

Results can be collected between 9am and 12pm in The Cullum Centre (Nevill Campus).
